Back-to-school season is just around the corner, strange as the circumstances might be this year. But learning will still happen, whether at home or school, and we encourage you to maintain the same type of back-to-school traditions you usually do. In addition to new backpacks and clothes (and face masks!), it’s smart to schedule a dental cleaning and a checkup as well! Most kids spend summer vacation snacking on popsicles, ice cream, and soda, so fall is the perfect time to get their teeth back on track!
Dental visits are an essential part of caring for your teeth. During a checkup, your dentist keeps an eye out for the early symptoms of tooth decay, gum disease, or a dental cavity. Preventative measures, such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants, will be taken to protect the teeth.
A healthy mouth and teeth start at home with a good at-home oral hygiene routine and a proper diet. A good oral hygiene routine includes brushing at least twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, flossing every day, and visiting the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and a checkup. Young children between the ages of 1-5 should be assisted with or supervised during toothbrushing. A diet high in vegetables, protein, and dairy, and low in sugar and carbs will also contribute to maintaining good oral and overall health.
