Self Ligating Brackets

Main Content

Self-ligating brackets are placed much like traditional brackets, however, self-ligating braces do not require the help of elastics like traditional braces do. Not only does this mean fewer appointments in the orthodontist’s chair, but also less tension and friction placed on your teeth. Self-ligating braces are also available in more options such as ceramic, clear, and the traditional metal.

How Self-Ligating Brackets Work

Instead of utilizing elastics to gently move your teeth into the correct position, self-ligating braces use a special clip. This clip will reduce the amount of pressure placed on the teeth and, because there aren’t any elastics to place, will decrease the number of adjustments you’ll need to have.

There are two types of self-ligating brackets, which are:

  • Passive Brackets – Passive brackets use a smaller arch-wire. This will decrease the friction placed on the teeth and will allow the teeth to move more freely. These types of brackets are typically used at the beginning of your orthodontic treatment to help the teeth begin to move into the correct position.
  • Active Brackets – Active brackets use a thicker arch-wire. This applies more pressure to the teeth in order to move them more quickly and aggressively into position. Active brackets offer more consistent results.
