Orthodontics for Kids

The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that each child receive an orthodontic consultation by the age of 7. By this age, your child’s mouth is developed enough that Dr. Kuhni can determine how it will continue to develop as the adult teeth emerge.

Early detection of certain orthodontic conditions can make them much easier to treat. Catching these issues early can give Dr. Kuhni the control over where the permanent teeth erupt before they’ve even emerged.

Benefits of Childhood Orthodontics

Along with helping a child’s confidence with their smile, here are some additional benefits of early intervention through childhood orthodontics:

  1. Correcting bad habits that may have been the reason orthodontic intervention is needed, such as thumb sucking or tongue pushing.
  2. Discover and correct the way the permanent teeth with develop and erupt.
  3. Correct bite problems such as cross bite, open bite, and over or under bites.
  4. Lower the risk of damage to any teeth that may be protruding.
  5. Prevent the need for future (and possible more severe) orthodontic treatment.
  6. Improve the aesthetics of your child’s smile, which in turn can help improve self-esteem and confidence.

Even if your child doesn’t need immediate orthodontic treatment, it can still be beneficial to receive a consultation from Dr. Kuhni. We’re able to determine what type of orthodontic treatment, if any, will be needed in the future.

It’s important to us that your child’s growth and his or her orthodontic treatment properly compliment each other. We’re able to strategically time the placement of braces with stages of dental development, taking advantage of your child’s own oral development and growth.
