Studies have found that only around 8-10% of people successfully stick to their New Year’s resolutions. Many people have actually never been able to keep their resolutions. This is upsetting because we all want to keep the goals we set for ourselves! Our problem may lie in how we approach New Year’s resolutions. Here at Kuhni Orthodontic Studio, we suggest putting together a list of a few realistic goals and we also recommend adding a few goals that can help you achieve and maintain a healthy and beautiful smile that you can be proud to show off. Setting Dental Hygiene Resolutions Below are a few suggestions of resolutions that can benefit your dental and oral health:

  1. Brush and floss each day – Set a goal to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes twice a day. Set a timer to make sure you’re brushing for the full two minutes. Additionally, you should commit to flossing at least once a day. If you’re not used to flossing regularly, you may notice some bleeding of the gums, but this is normal at first.
  2. Quit smoking and tobacco products – Use of tobacco products is the main cause of severe gum disease, also known as periodontitis. Not only will kicking the smoking habit improve your dental health, but it will also improve your overall health as well.
  3. Avoid overdoing it on sugar – Lastly, try to set limits on your sugar consumption this year. If the teeth are exposed to large amounts of sugar for a prolonged period of time, the tooth enamel will begin to break down and become vulnerable to tooth decay and dental cavities.
If one of your dental resolutions is to feel more confident in your smile, a great way to improve the way your smile looks is through orthodontic treatment.
