Orthodontics has a long history that dates back to the ancient Greek and Roman Empires. By 400 BC, well-known philosophers such as Aristotle and Hippocrates had already begun thinking of new ideas for straightening teeth. Archaeologists around the world have also discovered evidence that suggests the Etruscan people used tools to prevent dental ailments. Some remains during this era have even been found with mouth appliances similar to braces and dentures.

Early Innovations

A medical document on teeth-straightening techniques was written in 1728 by the French dental expert Pierre Fauchard, who many historians and dentists credit as the founder of modern dentistry. Fauchard pioneered a method of broadening the upper palate known as ‘bandeau.’ Louis Bourdet, published a book in 1754 that highlighted ways to improve the bandeau. He is also credited as being the first dentist to remove bicuspid teeth in order to lessen crowding. Orthodontics wasn't officially recognized as a separate branch of dentistry until the 19th century. Joachim Lafoulon initially used the word "orthodontia" in 1841. Dentists used a wire crib for the first time in 1819. Around this time, loops, hooks, spurs, and ligatures to straighten teeth were made from metal and rubber. Several milestone innovations came about during this time period. Edward Maynard was the first dentist to use gum elastics in 1843. In 1850. E.J Tucker was the first to use rubber bands for braces, a practice that is still popular today.

Modern Orthodontics

Orthodontics has seen many innovations over the past 20 years, thanks to technological advancements. We now have superior-quality 3D dental imaging and digital x-rays which enable orthodontists to see the mouth's structure in greater detail. Additionally, newer technology can produce scans and images instantly, saving patients time and money. Given how quickly the field has evolved, it’s fascinating to wonder where orthodontics will be in the near future. If you are looking for a great orthodontist, contact Kuhni Orthodontic Studio today.
