3 Ways to Prevent Breaking Orthodontic Braces

If you have braces fixed over your teeth, you’re going to have to be extra careful as they have the potential to break into pieces. The sole purpose of getting orthodontic braces is to prevent any misalignment while strengthening the gums. Here’s how you can avoid or prevent breaking your braces.

1.    Stop Eating Chewy Foods

Chewing gum or any other food item that is sticky in nature can cause your braces to loosen or break. These foods create a suction that sticks to the braces and leads them to break into pieces. So, if you want to keep your braces intact, we’d advise you not to eat such foods at all, or at least reduce the frequency of consuming such products. Likewise, sweet treats like toffees, caramels, and chewing gums should be avoided as much as possible.

2.    Stop Crushing Hard Foods

Hard foods can be tough shells to crack. Their hard exterior makes it difficult to chew for people who have braces. If too much pressure is exerted to break such foods into tinier pieces, chances are you’ll break your braces with them. So, hard foods such as tortilla chips, hard candy, etc., shouldn’t be consumed on a regular basis if you want to prevent your braces from breaking.

3.    Reduce Physical Activity

If you’re someone who is a fitness enthusiast and indulges in numerous physical activities, our advice will be to protect your mouth area at all times. The thing with physical activities is that one is prone to get injured quite easily. All it takes is one hit to the mouth area to bend a wire or break a bracket placed on your teeth.
