The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry has discovered that around 1 out of every 5 children suffer from canker sores. These sores can be painful and irritating, appearing as small, red sores on the tongue, the inside of the cheeks, the gum tissue, or the lips. Canker sores aren’t contagious, but they have been shown to run in families.

Causes of Canker Sores

Below are a few of the common causes of canker sores:
  • Food allergies
  • Deficiency of iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12
  • Brushing too roughly
  • Frequently biting on the inside of the cheeks or lips
  • Stress or emotional disturbances
  • An injury to the mouth, especially if the skin is broken
  • Sensitivity or allergy to toothpaste

Easing The Pain and Discomfort of Sold Sores

Below are a few ways to help avoid or eliminate cold sores for your child:
  • Make sure your child eats plenty of yogurt or chews acidophilus tablets
  • Don’t use mouthwash or toothpaste containing SLS
  • Supply your child with a soft-bristled brush and make sure he or she brushes gently
  • Avoid serving food that is overly spicy, salty, or acidic
  • Use lidocaine, Camphor, and Orajel to help ease the discomfort of canker sores
  • Help your child avoid foods that they have allergies or sensitivities to
