If you aren’t caring properly for your braces, you could damage them, which would disrupt your treatment plan or cause problems with your teeth.
TIPS ON CARING FOR METAL BRACES
Below are a few tips on how to properly care for your metal braces:- Choose the right oral hygiene products – Here at Kuhni Orthodontics, Dr. Kam Kuhni will provide you with information about the best type of toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash to use with your braces. Make sure you follow these instructions to prevent damage to the braces by harsh materials, abrasives, or dyes that could cause discoloration to the elastics or brackets.
- Brush your teeth to remove food debris – When wearing braces, it’s important to make sure you brush after every meal to remove any food or beverage debris that may have become stuck in the brackets and wires. If you’re unable to brush after every meal, at least try to rinse your mouth with water.
- Floss every day – After finding the right type of floss recommended to you, make sure you’re flossing every day. Flossing is the best way to avoid tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath while wearing braces. It’s a good idea to carry floss with you to remove any foods that become stuck in your teeth throughout the day.
- Choose your diet carefully – After your braces are placed, you will be provided with a list of foods to avoid while undergoing orthodontic treatment. These foods can cause damage to the orthodontic equipment and may include:
- Nuts
- Sticky candies
- Popcorn
- Bagels
- Tough meat
- Whole raw fruit
