If you’ve just had braces put on here at Kuhni Orthodontic Studio, we want to congratulate you! You have taken the first step toward achieving a beautiful and healthy smile. We know that the first few weeks with braces on can be an adjustment and you might be wondering what to expect. Braces can be hard to get used to, but in a few weeks, they’ll feel completely natural.

What To Expect During The First Week

The day you receive your braces, they’ll feel foreign in your mouth. It may feel like your lips are unable to close properly, and you may have a difficult time with speech for a while. The second day may bring some soreness or discomfort, but any real pain won’t occur until the third or fourth day. Make sure you have ibuprofen and Tylenol on hand, just in case! It may take the soft tissues of your mouth (like your tongue, gum tissue, and the insides of your cheeks) some time to adjust to the metal of your braces. Orthodontic wax will be provided to you, or you can purchase more in the toothpaste aisle of any grocery or drug store. This wax is used to cover the spots of metal that are causing the most trouble. Finally, avoid sticky and hard candies, chewing on ice, or using your braces as tools to open bottles or packages. These may break or otherwise damage your braces. If you do have a bracket or wire come loose, please contact our office immediately for an appointment. To schedule an appointment, or even if you have questions or concerns about your new braces, please don’t hesitate to contact Kuhni Orthodontic Studio located here in Spanish Fork, Utah.
